The Swan Dream I Never Let Go Of
Share
Have you ever had that dream — the one where the ugly duckling wakes up one day, completely transformed, and is suddenly a beautiful swan? Your face, your career, your education, anything about yourself you've quietly wished you could remake overnight. I think most women have had some version of this dream at some point.
A long time ago, I read a book that mentioned an old idea from Eastern thought: wherever the heart goes, life follows. That reality can shift because of a person's will — that intention carries a kind of power most of us underestimate. It might sound a little mystical, put that way. But even in modern research, there's real evidence for the effects of focus, of flow, of the quiet pull some people call energy. I don't need it to be provable to know it's shaped my own life.
When I was a student, I worked harder than almost anyone I knew. My grades never showed it. I wasn't naturally gifted, and I knew it. I wasn't considered pretty either — round face, small eyes, a flat nose bridge, plain by most standards, including my own. Between the grades and the way I looked, I spent those years turning inward. I grew quiet. I preferred solitude to socializing, slow afternoons with a book to the noise of a crowd. And underneath all of that, I kept one dream running quietly in the background: that someday, I'd become someone successful. Someone beautiful. Not for anyone else's benefit — just to finally feel like the person I suspected I could be.
Intention and reality moved together, slowly, in ways I only understood looking backward. Now, in my forties, I have work I genuinely love — work that doesn't just pay the bills but actually makes me feel the good, quiet happiness of being alive. That swan dream never went away, not once, in all these years. I still carry it. I still believe that one day, I'll bloom in the sunlight the way a flower does — fully, without apology — and take in everything beautiful this life has to offer.
